Vaccas minus contaminante

Less Contaminating Cows

The emission of gases that contribute to global warming is a source of worry for Irish authorities, especially because the production of beef and of dairy products is responsible for 28% of the gases emitted by that country.

The principal problem is methane (CH4), which is produced in the intestines of these animals because of the way they digest what they eat. This gas is at least twenty times more contaminating than carbon dioxide (CO2).

A cow can produce from 100 to 200 liters of methane each day. The Irish authorities are confident that science can help them find solutions to the problem.

Some investigators are confident that giving a simple pill to the animals could reduce the emissions, but there are many scientists in Ireland who have doubts about the effectiveness of this method.

Others are working on the creation of new breeds of cows that will mature much more rapidly and that will emit less methane because they will not live as long.

Le renascimento de un village marrocchin

“Illo esseva horribile”, memora ille.

Lor corpores esseva interrate in Espania post haber essite immagasinate unes septimanas in morgues.

“Hodie il ha 170 familias qui vive in Hansala.

A Moroccan village is reborn thanks to a Spanish non-government organization.

Rafael Quiroz will never forget the day when he and his wife discovered thirty-seven bodies swollen up with water on a beach near their house in the south of Spain.

“It was horrible,” he remembers. But the sight of the bodies of Moroccan immigrants on the beach has inspired them to act.

“All these young people dead on the beach! We were quite shocked, but immediately we thought about their families on the other coast.

They were the bodies of thirty-seven Africans, who, like hundreds of others, were killed while trying to cross the Strait of Gibraltar, which separates Morocco from Spain.

Their boat was overloaded and not robust enough to confront the strong currents and the rapid changes of the weather conditions in the strait.

After they sailed for a day and a half, a storm erupted and the boat sank. In it there were fifty-seven candidates for clandestine immigration. Most of them had never seen the ocean and thus did not know how to swim.

Rafael Cuesta and his wife, Violeta, are two teachers in the city of Rota in Spain. Since they have lived on the coast for various years, this was not the first time that they were witnesses to the tragic consequences of illegal immigration to Spain. But this time they decided to act.

“During these last twenty years, more than 80,000 people have died in the sea while they sailed to Europe. Their bodies were buried in Spain after having been stored a few weeks in morgues. Their families will never know what happened to them.

“This time we told ourselves, ‘This can’t go on. We have to do something,'” Mr. Quiroz remembers.

Searching for where these dead migrants came from, the couple discovered that twelve of them came from Hansala, a village in the mountainous region of Bene Mellal, one of the poorest in Morocco.

This region is known as “the triangle of death” because of the great number of candidates it has for illegal immigration.

Rafael and Violeta decided to go to Hansala to propose the return of the bodies of the dead to their relatives. When they arrived in Hansala, they discovered collapsed huts in ruins scattered on the side of the mountain, without running water and electricity.

“The inhabitants of this village are very poor but generous. They shared with us the small amount of food that they had. Still, the families of the victims were reluctant to speak because they thought that we were from the Spanish government and were going to ask for money to return the bodies,” Mr. Quiroz remembers.

Only with other trips and and the help of a Berber interpreter were they able to gain their confidence of the people in the village.

“Only several months after the shipwreck were we able to finally repatriate the bodies to Hansala. All the inhabitants participated and helped in the funerals of the twelve young men. Only that day did we feel we were part of the village.”

But the repatriation of the bodies was only the beginning of their efforts to help Hansala out. After this event, the Spanish couple founded a nongovernmental organization (NGO), Direct Solidarity. During their vacations, with their savings and the help of philanthropists and people in the village, little by little they have improved living conditions in this village.

They built a dispensary and renovated an old school; they have gathered money for scholarships that pay the equivalent of what children earn in the fields to allow their parents to send them to school.

Saïd was the beneficiary of one of these scholarships. He learned Spanish completely by himself, and he is now the local correspondent for Direct Solidarity.

“Today there are 170 families who live in Hansala. Everyone participates in the program and benefits from it, he said. “A doctor now comes twice a week. Children go to school, and we have created an association to improve conditions for women. We are organizing schools to teach women how to make fruits into preserves. Sales of these products allow them to earn a little money.”

Buying healthy animals, thanks to Direct Solidarity’s money, has given a certain number of people in the village the means of earning their living once again as shepherds.

The most important thing is that this intiative has has contributed to changing the thinking of the young people who used to believe that their only hope of finding work was to try to emigrate illegally to Europe through the Strait of Gibraltar.

“When I came the first time to Hansala, people asked me to help them enter Spain illegally. Now they want advice on how to start a business,” Saïd affirmed.

A lot remains to be done. And life, despite the improvements, is difficult, especially in winter when rains flood the roads and render them useless. And no one living in Hansala has tried to sail across the strait since 2003.

Emotional facial expressions are innate, a study says.

A study made by American investigators suggests that the facial expressions used to show emotions is innate to humans, and they are not learned as a person goes through life.

The specialists of the California State University, San Francisco, arrived at this conclusion after comparing 4,800 photographs of blind and sighted judo athletes during medal-presentation ceremonies in the 2004 Olympic Games and in the Para-Olympic Games.

According to the researchers, both the athletes with visual deficiencies and the ones with normal vision displayed the same facial expressions on coming in first place. Rather similar facial expressions were also observed among the ones who lost the competitions.

During the investigations the faces of the athletes earning gold and silver medals were examined.

While the winners often displayed natural happiness after winning, the ones coming in second place produced a “social smile,” which involves only a movement of the mouth indicating more superficiality than spontaneity.

“This suggests that something genetic is controlling emotional facial expressions,” said the author of the study, Prof. Matsumoto.

“The correlation between the facial expressions of the individuals with perfect vision and the ones with deficiencies was almost perfect.”

---

The common linguistic heritage of Europe and of the Americas is derived from Greek and Latin. Beginning in 1924, professional linguists collected the Latin which has survived and recorded it in the Interlingua-English Dictionary, a work published by the International Auxiliary Language Association in 1951.

The result is called Interlingua. Its grammar has been simplified to the greatest possible extent, and an educated European or American can understand a technical or scientific text in Interlingua at sight and can learn to use the language in an extremely short time.

Its practical utility has been demonstrated as a language of summaries in scientific publications, above all in the field of medicine, and as the sole means of communication in international conferences.

For the peoples of Africa and Asia, Interlingua serves as a key to the western languages. Interlingua is in fact their common demoninator.

In the teaching of languages, it provides a rapid means of learning the international vocabulary (in Swedish secondary schools, an independent subject) and is an excellent preparation for the study of the Romance languages and a deeper appreciation of the English language.
