(Languages of this post: Interlingua, English)

The Norwegian Interlingua Union has published an excellent course for English speakers, the “Interlingua Course for Beginners.” It is the English version of a course written for Danes by Thomas Breinstrup, the secretary of the Danish Interlingua Union. It is published in the PDF format, and you can easily print it out and learn a vocabulary of about 750 words as you study it.

The first ten lessons narrate the complete history of the Hansen family, who go to Scotland to visit their friends. There are grammatical explanations and exercises for each lesson. The last five lessons are longer conversations. The URL for this course is [http://www.interlingua.com/an/curso].

This course is shorter than my course, “Lege interlingua e apprende su structura,” which uses the inductive method.without the need for explanations in other languages and is available at the site for “Interlingua in interlingua,” [http://www.geocities.com/hkyson]. Though Thomas Breinstrup’s teaching method differs from mine, his course is excellent.

(Languages of this post: Interlingua, French, English)

O possibilemente,"De amor morir me face, belle marchessa, vostre belle oculos."

Ou bien : "D'amour mourir me font, belle Marquise, vos beux yeux." Ou bien : "Me font vos yeux beaux mourir, belle Marquise, d'amour me font." Ou bien : "Me font vos yeux beaux mourir, belle Marquise, d'amour."

Mr. Jourdain learns that he knows how to manipulate his native language quite well.

MR. JOURDAIN: God damn! I have been speaking prose for forty years without knowing it. I would now like to put it into a love letter : "My beautiful marquise, your beautiful eyes make me die of love."But I would like to express that in the most gallant way, rewritten in an elegant way.

MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY: Say that the fires of her eyes reduce your heart to cinders; that because of her you are suffering night and day the violence of a...

MR. JOURDAIN: No, no, no, I don't want any of that stuff. I only want what I have said "My beautiful marquise, your beautiful eyes make me die of love."

MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY: It would be better to extend it a bit.

MR. JOURDAIN: No, I'm telling you, I want to include only those words in the letter, but expressed most elegantly in the best way possible.

MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY: Okay. You could write them the way you said, "My beautiful marquise, your beautiful eyes make me die of love." Or you could say, "Of love I am made to die, my beautiful marquise, by your beautiful eyes." Or you could also say,"By your beautiful eyes, my beautiful marquise, I am made to die." Another possibility would be,"I am made to die by your beautiful eyes, my beautiful marquise, of love."

MR. JOURDAIN: Yeah, but which of all those ways is the best?

MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY: The one that you gave, "My beautiful marquise, your beautiful eyes make me die of love."

MR. JOURDAIN: Wow! And to think that I haven't done any studying at all, and I got it right the first time around. I want to thank you with all my heart, and please come back again early tomorrow.

MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY: I’ll be sure to do so.

Verbos in anglese e interlingua

(Languages of this post: Introduction in Interlingua, examples in Interlingua and English)

(Okay, here's the procedure for this part of our study: Johano speaks these words in English. Afterwards the computer translates them into French. And finally the subjects of this experiment hear these words through a loudspeaker controlled by the computer.)

(Maria and Irma spoke these words in English, and the computer translated them into Italian. Finally all the students heard them through a loudspeaker controlled by the computer.)

(3) Gustavo parlara iste gruppo de parolas in espaniol.

(Gustavo will speak this group of words in Spanish. The computer will translate them into Portuguese and Italian. Afterwards he and his friends will hear them through a small loudspeaker that the computer will control.)

(4) Sven va a parlar iste parolas in svedese.

(Sven is going to speak these words in Swedish. The computer will translate them into German, and afterwards the lab/laboratory assistants are going to hear them through a small loudspeaker that the computer will control.)

(Here's what we were going to do: Sven was going to speak these words in Swedish. The computer was going to translate them into German, and afterwards the lab/laboratory assistants were going to hear their spoken forms when the computer had finished its processing of the words. But we had to stop this part of the study because of new problems with the computer software.)

(If Albert were one of the volunteers for this experiment, he would speak these words in Catalan. Then the computer would translate them into French, Spanish, and Portuguese. Finally, everyone would be able to hear their spoken forms through a loudspeaker with a connection to the computer.)

[After having spoken translated, and listened to these words through the loudspeaker of the tape recorder, the students are going to write (all of them [out])/(them all [out])].

(He has spoken these words into a microphone. After that, the computer has analyzed and translated them into Japanese. Finally, all the students have heard them through the loudspeakers of the computer.)

(Before the experiment finished, all the students had spoken these words so that the computer could process them. Afterwards the computer had translated them into the Romance languages. Finally all the lab/laboratory assistants had listened to them, but it was obvious that the system was not working very well.)

(Before we will continue with the experiment, Albert will have spoken these words in English, the computer will have translated them into all the languages included in its program, and at the end of this class everyone will have heard the translations of this second group of languages through the loudspeaker of the computer.)

(11) Secundo nostre plan anterior, Alberto haberea parlate iste parolas in anglese, le computator los haberea traducite a omne le linguas includite in su programma, e al fin de iste classe on haberea audite le traductiones de iste secunde gruppo de linguas per le altoparlator del computator.

(According to our former plan, Alberto would have spoken these words in English, the computer would have translated them into all the languages included in its program, and at the end of this class everyone would have heard the translations of this second group of languages through the loudspeaker of the computer.)

(Hearing these words through the loudspeaker, the students found that they could understand them easily.)

(The students, hearing thse groups through the loudspeaker, found that they could understand them easily.)

(With the students having understood the first group of words without mistakes, the computer then processed the second group.)

(Having understood the first group of words processed by the computer, the students waited for the second group.)

(The students, having understood the first group of words processed by the computer, waited for the second group.)

(Gustavo, having spoken this group of words processed by the computer, waited for a new group of words.)

(Gustavo, having spoken this group of words to the computer, waited until it processed them.)

(Having translated these words into Spanish, the computer emitted them in a spoken form through its loudspeaker.)

(Having heard these words through the loudspeaker, the students found that they could not understand them.)

(With the students having spoken the first group of words, the computer then processed them, pronouncing them through its loudspeaker.)

(The students had spoken the first group of words; and the computer, after processing them, also pronounced them (at the same time)/(simultaneously) through its loudspeaker.)

Le economia es multo malade, dice Obama.

The president elect of the United States, Barack Obama, described the US economy as “very sick” and warned that things will get worse.

“We must act immediately to interrupt the process that is causing this recession,” he said. He added that the latest figures on unemployment in the Untied States are very worrisome.

Previously, Obama got together with congressional leaders to discuss measures to stimulate the economy and create new jobs. He presented to the Congress an economic stimulus plan that could reach $800 billion in two years, which includes tax reductions of some $300 billion. Africa e le medicina moderne

Africa and Modern Medicine

The contributions of European society to medicine were recognized a long time ago. The Greeks are considered to be the fathers of modern medicine. They studied the progression of illnesses, they knew about the nature of the human body, and their language has given medicine a lot of its vocabulary.

But the Greeks probably learned a great deal from the ancient Egyptians, who knew about the structure and function of the human body from their practice of mummification. Imhotep, the famous architect of the pyramids, is known as the first "father of medicine" because of his influence.

The Egyptologist Stephen Quirke indicates that even if the information that came from this era is not complete, Imhotep certainly played an important role. Attributed to him are the diagnosis and treatment of more than 200 illnesses. It is likely that he practiced some surgery and dentistry. Some people say that his work even influenced Hippocrates.

Katie Maggs, of the Museum of the Sciences in London, indicated that a lot of African contributions to medicine have been ignored. "Some elements of African medicine, principally the practices of Egyptian medicine, had an influence on Greek culture, and there was an exchange of ideas," she insists. "Indian and Chinese medications are available everywhere, but African products are still a taboo subject, and we should now recognize that this is true."

Professor Peter Houghton, an expert in natural medicine at Univerity College, London, indicates that the medical establishment has traditionally rejected the therapeutic uses of African plants because they had no scientific explanation. But it now is possible to verify or falsify their effectiveness.

He has indicated that a certain number of African remedies based on plants are sold in the United Kingdom or on the Internet. "The most recognized is Devil's Claw, which is the root of a plant that comes from the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa and which is used in the treatment of pain," he said. "There is also a cream extracted from a fruit that is found everywhere in the savannah, which I am working on right now."

Finally, professor Houghton also indicated that there was a lot of interest some years ago in the therapeutic uses against obesity of a South African plant similar to a cactus that the bushmen used to reduce their appetite when they went hunting.

Linguas planficate ex le familias germanic e slavic

(Languages of this post: Interlingua, English)

In anglese isto esserea “Let’s walk along the river”. In le hollandese isto esserea “Laten we langs de rivier lopen”.

Planned languages from the Germanic and Slavic Families

Interlingua, as we all know, is a planned language constructed from the elements common to the Angloromance languages and Latin. It is also possible to construct similar planned languages from other language families.

An example of such a language constructed from the Germanic family is Inneran. Here is a brief text in Inneran: “Let wy along þe rivví lopà”. In English this would be “Let’s walk along the river.” In Dutch this would be “Laten we langs de rivier lopen.” Naturally, there are other planned languages from this family. I myself saw a planned language from the common elements between Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish. Unfortunately, I could not find the name of this language.

Linguas planificate ex le familias germanic e slavic

Slovio is a planned language extracted from the Slavic family. I read in a site dedicated to Slovio that one of its users learned it after starting with Russian, which she found very difficult. But she learned Slovio very easily. And after learning it, she returned to her studies of Russian, which she then found easier to study. Probably there are other planned languages coming out of the Slavic family.

(This indicates that studying Slovio can be an excellent introduction to the languages of the Slavic family the way Interlingua can be a good way of getting into the Romance family of languages.)

Personally, I prefer Interlingua because of the influence that Latin has had on Western civilization and because of the importance of the international scientific vocabulary constructed from elements of Greek and Latin. These other projects are undoubtedly interesting, and if I had studied all their source languages as much as I have studied the source languages of Interlingua, I would find their study very interesting.
