(3) Dixitque alter ad proximum suum: Venite, faciemus lateres, et coquamus eos igni. Habueruntque lateres pro saxis, et bitumen pro caemento;

The History of Babel

(1) Now all the earth continued to be of one language and of one set of words.

(2) and it came about that in their journeying eastward they eventually discovered a valley plain in the land of Shinar, and they took up dwelling there.

(3) And they began to say, each one to the other: “Come on! Let us make bricks and bake them with a burning process.” So brick served as stone for them, but bitumen served as mortar for them.

(4) They now said: “Come on! Let us build ourselves a city and also a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a celebrated name for ourselves, for fear we may be scattered over all the surface of the earth.”

(5) And the Lord proceeded to go down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men had built.

(6) After that the Lord said: “Look! They are one people and there is one language for them all, and this is what they start to do. Why, now there is nothing that they may have in mind to do that will be unattainable for them.

(7) Come now! Let us go down and there confuse their language that they may not listen to one another’s language.”

(8) Accordingly the Lord scattered them from there over all the surface of the earth, and they gradually left off building the city.

(9) That is why its name was called Babel, because there Jehovah had confused the language of all the earth, and the Lord had scattered them from there over all the surface of the earth.

"Loeiz" parla sur su discoperimento de interlingua.

(Languages of this post: Interlingua, English)

Io me habeva specialisate in le litteratura medieval.

“Loeiz” speaks about his discovery of Interlingua.

When I discovered Interlingua some years a go, what I immediately liked was the protypical form of the words. In the university, I studied French literature and linguistics. I had majored in medieval literature. I thus studied Old French and what we call “historical phonetics.” This is the progressive transformation of words from Latin to modern French. And thanks to that old knowledge, I understood how the words of Interlingua had been constructed. “This is a marvelous game for linguists!” I said to myself. In addition, understanding the texts gave me a pleasure that I found in no other planned language.

Another thing that I liked in Intelringua is the rhythm of the language, thanks to the position of the stress accent on the last, second-to-the-last, or third-to-the-last syllable, but always on what was accented in Latin, providing a natural and singing rhythm that exists neither in French, for example, which is always stressed on the last syllable, nor in Esperanto, which is always stressed on the second-to-the last syllable despite the original position of stress in the original word.

Now what I like above all in Interlingua is that it is a true language, a complete language. It is not some sort of wounded Latin or a mixture of various languages whose heterogeneous elements form a horrible jargon, or a distortion of source languages. On the contrary, it carries within itself the heritage of Latin and of the the languages that were born from it. It is living, it gives us all the nuances that we need, it has its own rhythm and its own genius.

In writing or speaking, in translating or creating new texts, we should not try to reproduce what exists in our respective languages but should search instead for what is specific to Interlingua. In this way we will attain the initial and ultimate goal of Interlingua, namely the internationality of discourse, with the idea of being understood by the greatest number of people.

Introduction a interlingua

(Languages of this post: Interlingua, Spanish, Portuguese, English)

Illo esseva create in 1951.

Introducción a interlingua

Introduction to Interlingua

There are two auxiliary languages with the name “Interlingua.” One is the Interlingua of Giuseppe Peano, better known as “Latino sine flexione (“Latin without inflections), and the other is the Interlingua of IALA.

The Interlingua of IALA (International Auxiliary Language Association) is a language developed by professional linguists to be used as an auxiliary language in international communication. It was published in 1951.

Just as the vocabulary of Esperanto was taken from the Romance, Germanic, and Slavic languages, with many words having been deformed and others invented from scratch, the vocabulary of Interlingua was taken from Latin, from the principal Romance languages, from English, and, to a smaller extent, from German and Russian.

The grammar of Interlingua was inspired in part from English grammar, but with greater simplifications. Interlingua tries to be the “common essence” of all the European languages, and a modern version of what Latin was in the ancient world.

The grammar and vocabulary of Interlingua were finalized in 1951 after more than twenty years of study and work undertaken by IALA. Alexander Gode was one of the first people to undertake this project. He published a detailed grammar, a dictionary of Interllingua-English, and an introductory book, “Interlingua a prime Vista.”

The Interlingua of IALA can be understood immediately, without the need for previous study, by all those speaking the Romance language and also, to a considerable extent, by English speakers. This makes Interlingua Interlingua the auxiliary language that the greatest number of people in the world can understand, sinc it is calculated that the Romance languages (Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italiano, etc.) have about one billion speakers, in addition to speakers of English.

Interlingua has followers in many countries, such as the United States, Brazil, the Netherlands, Russia, Italy, France, Poland, Bulgary, and especially the Scandinavian countries, where its use has been highly cultivated, and there are various web pages dedicated to Interlingua.

Today Interlingua, as a living language, continues to grow and adapting itself to changes and advances in society; and besides the vocabulary taken from classical Latin in Gode’s original version, Interlingua has a modern Romance vocabulary. For exemplo emer(comprar) has been replaced by “comprar.” Such systematic modernization has producied what can be called a contemporary pan-Romance dialect.

“The sword is too short,” Putin said. “It’s only good for cutting sausage.” Since he didn’t want to offend the powerful prime minister, Glazunov immediately agreed to correct the alleged error.

Unhealthy Lifestyles double the risk of stroke.

A study published by the University of East Anglia in Britain suggests that the adoption of an unhealthy lifestyle can more than double the risk of stroke. Habits such as smoking, alcohol consumption, doing little exercise and eating few fruits and vegetables may contribute to the occurrence of a stroke, according to the experts.

They analyzed questionnaires received from about 20,000 people, men and women from forty to seventy-nine years old for a period lasting eleven years. A total of 599 had strokes during this period. The researchers gave points for each instance of “healthy behavior” of each participant and noted the scores of those who suffered a stroke. These people were characterized by more negligent health habits.

Among the positive characteristics were habits of not smoking, drinking within the limits recommended by UK health authorities, consuming five servings of fruits and vegetables per day, and being physically active.

The authors of the study admitted that it has some limitations, but they suggest that the results may provide some support to the idea that small differences in lifestyle can have a substantial impact on the risk of stroke.

Previous studies had linked unhealthy lifestyles to the development of heart disease. The relationship between lifestyle and stroke, however, has not been widely explored by scientists.

The results of the study were published in the “British Medical Journal.”
