Leonard Bernstein was born in 1918 and died in 1990. During the seventy-two years of his life, Bernstein was one of the most productive musicians of the United States. He was a composer, orchestra conductor, pianist, and music teacher.

He composed serious classical music, as well as popular music, at times combining both in the same work. He was the musical director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra for more than ten years. Like Mozart, he often played the piano as he conducted the orchestra. He appeared in many television programs and wrote books to explain the nature of music, especially to young people.

Bernstein was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. His father and mother were Jews from Russia. They met and got married in the United States. Very early in his life he showed exceptional musical talents. His father, however, did not want him to become a professional musician because he did not believe that Leonard could earn very much money in that profession.

Bernstein insisted, however, that he was not interested in another kind of career and became a music student at Harvard University and at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During the summer, he studied at a famous music center in Massachusetts known as Tanglewood, where, among other things, he studied symphony-orchestra conducting with Serge Koussevitsky and Fritz Reiner. Later on, Bernstein returned to Tanglewood to teach music almost every summer during his life.

In 1943 Bernstein became the assistant director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. In November of that year, the conductor of the orchestra, Bruno Walter, fell ill and was not able to conduct the orchestra in an important concert.

With very little time to prepare himself, Bernstein brilliantly conducted the orchestra during that concert. The following day, the “New York Times” published an article praising Bernstein on its front page, and since the day of its publication, he received many invitations to conduct the most famous orchestras of the United States.

In 1958, Bernstein became the first American musical director of the New York Philharmonic. Music critics said that the New York Philharmonic improved dramatically under his direction.

Compared to a very powerful ocean storm, Bernstein traveled a great deal to conduct the most famous orchestras in the world. He also composed and taught music. In his home, he and his wife, the Chilean actrice Felicia Montealegre, raised three children. Their home attracted the most famous artists, musicians, and authors of the United States.

Critics say that Bernstein wrote his best music in his youthful years. He wrote “Symphony Number Two, the Age of Anxiety,” in 1949 when he was around thirty years old. This symphony is especially admired by critics, who say that it captures the essence of the American music of its time.

Bernstein also composed various symphonies that show his profound interest in his Jewish religion. He also composed other works throughout the years for orchestras and singing groups, as well as operas and ballets.

Many believe that his best music can be found in Broadway musicals (works like “On the Town,” “Wonderful Town,” and “Candide”). Some music critics insist that “Candide” embodies Bernstein’s best musical work.

“West Side Story,” which narrates a modern version of “Romeo and Juliet,” the play by William Shakespeare, is perhaps Bernstein’s most famous musical work. Its debut on Broaday was in 1957, and it still is very famous everywhere in the world.

For three years Bernstein worked on “Mass”, which had its debut at the opening of the Kennedy Center. “Mass” narrates the life of a young man who lost his belief in God. In “Mass” Bernstein combined the characteristics of classical music, the blues, Rock and Roll, and religious music.

For all his life, Leonard Bernstein was concerned with social problems along with his music. He supported the civil rights movement of that era and opposed the Vietnam War. He also conducted concerts to raise money for the fight against AIDS.

He continued to compose and conduct orchestras until the end of his life in 1990, the last time at Tanglewood. Two months after this concert, he died in his home in New York. Like George Gershwin, he gave to the world a lot of quintessentially American music that will always be famous.
