(3) Version in italiano moderne, Anno 2000:

(3) Versione in italiano moderno, Anno 2000:

Charles Hall Grandgent and the Reconstruction of the Popular Language of the Romans during the time of Augustus, when the Roman Empire began

By Bruno Zani

According to students of the prehistoric period of European Civilization, the prevailing point of view says that 3,500 years have gone by since the arrival in Europe of a migratory wave of people speaking Proto Indo-European (PIE). It is not known for certain where their “Ur Heimat” or fatherland is located.

Another point of view, the theory of “paleolithic continuity,” maintains that the PIE languages arrived in Europe from Africa a long time previously, perhaps twenty thousand years ago, and their speakers established themselves only on the southern coasts of Europe, the only European area that was not covered with ice. Some of these people migrated toward the north, slowly following the retreat of the glaciers at the end of the final glaciations. Others remained on the coasts where they were born.

Genetic studies show that eighty percent of the population of Europe share the same genetic DNA markers not only between them but also with the prehistoric populations of Europe and that markers indicating differentiation or isolation correspond not only to areas occupied by different families of PIE, but also to specific prehistoric civilizations covering the same areas.

This theory proposes that PIE was also the original language of the Cro-magnons, of the family “Homo sapiens sapiens,” who gave us the very beautiful painted caves in the south of France and, in smaller numbers, in Italy, Spain, and the Balcan peninsula.

This language was very conservative and changed very slowly in the original areas where it was spoken, but more rapidly within the nomadic population that followed the glaciers.

It is certain that the Italic family of PIE is very conservative and in many cases what are considered prototypes of PIE can still be found in modern Italian. Such words don’t seem to have changed much in thousands of years. Some examples are “morbo,” “nauta,” “aquila (akwila),” “aqua (akwa),” and “candela (kandela).” A large number of prototypes that are pure PIE came unchanged into Interlingua from its Anglo-Romance base.

It is thus not surprising that great conservatism also characterized the transition from classical Latin to proto-Italian for more than a thousand years. Vulgar Latin (characterized by the disappearance of noun declensions, the appearance of conjugations with auxiliary verbs, and an increasing role for word order in the grammar of these languages) did not stop evolving up to the time of Saint Francis of Assisi (around 1200). Dante completed this evolution.

Professor Charles Hall Grandgent published in 1951 an attempt to recreate the Latin dialect spoken in Rome at the time of the Emperor Augustus. With the help of modern linguists, I have recreated the proto-Italian of the year 1000. Here are the first paragraphs in three versions:

(1) Grandgent’s Version in the year 1:

(2) My Version in the Year 1000:

The fact that Dante finished by himself in twenty years a course of evolution lasting more than a thousand years is extremely surprising. What is not surprising is that the Italian language has not significantly changed in the seven hundred years coming afterward.
