Post tres annos de travalio, Disney finiva “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” in 1937. Millions of people have seen Disney’s films and his television programs and know Mickey Mouse and the other characters in his animated films. Millions of other people have visited Disneyland in California, Disney World in Florida, another Disneyland in Tokyo, Japan, and Euro-Disney in France. The mythology that Disney has created has its original elements, but Disney has also adapted myths from various parts of the world that he has artistically modified to produce new creations with a new fresh and original life.

Walter Elias Disney was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1901. When he was four years old, his family left Chicago for the rural life on a farm in Marceline, Missouri. At age sixteen, Disney started to study art in Chicago. Eventually he found and read a book, “Animated Cartoons: How They Are Made,” by Edwin G. Lutz.

Soon Frank L. Newman, who owned a movie theater in Kansas City, developed an interest in the short animated films that Disney produced, which were known as “Laugh-O-Grams” and became very popular among film fans at that time when the art of filmmaking was in the first phases of its evolution.

In 1923 Disney followed the other film pioneers to Hollywood. He wanted a career as a movie producer or director, but he could not find a job. He then decided to make animated films, which consist of a long series of cartoons. Each cartoon in such a film is a little different from the other cartoons that surround it; and presented in a rather rapid sequence, they produce the illusion of movement.

The first years for this new company that Disney founded were difficult. To produce successful films, Disney decided that he needed a series of well-known characters to populate them. In those years he worked with another young animator, Ub Iwerks. The two men often saw mice in the old building where they worked, and they started to draw cartoons of mice.

Eventually their sketches produced Mickey Mouse. Like a human, Mickey walked on two feet and wore white gloves on hands with four fingers. Mickey was drawn very easily with a series of circles, and he was perfect for animated films. In 1928 the public first saw Mickey Mouse in a short film named “Steamboat Willie.” Walt Disney himself provided Mickey’s voice, and the film was a great success.

In the next few years, Disney produced hundreds of films with Mickey Mouse. In Japan he was known as “Miki Kuchi.” In Italy he was “Topolino.” In Latin America he was “Ratón Miquelito.” Soon Mickey had a series of friends. One was the female mouse named “Minnie.” Afterwards came a duck named “Donald” and a dog with the name of “Pluto.”

Mickey Mouse films were extremely popular, but Disney also wanted to produce animated films that lasted more than an hour. His first film of this kind, “Snow White,” has its origin in “Schneewittchen,” a Grimm Brothers fairy tale. This version of the tale has the magic mirror and the seven dwarfs, to which Disney gave individual names. After three years of work, Disney finished “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” in 1937. It became one of the most famous films of Hollywood.

Many film experts say that, from an artistic perspective, the best of Disney’s films is “Pinocchio,” which Disney adapted from the creation of the Italian Carlo Collodi. The first drawn version of Pinocchio was by the artist Gris Grimley. But Disney’s artists wanted a kinder, more animated character and developed a new version of Pinocchio. They had to draw 2,500,000 pictures of him to complete the film. Though the artists who created Pinocchio were limited to two-dimensional pictures, their magic created the illusion of three dimensions and objects that were quite solid. Pinochio’s world was imaginary, but it appeared very concrete and easy to touch.

In the two decades starting in 1940, Disney produced other very popular animated films, which include “Fantasia,” “Dumbo,” “Bambi,” “Cinderella,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Peter Pan,” “Lady and the Tramp,” and “Sleeping Beauty.” All these films are popular even now.

Disney also produced many films and television programs with living actors. He also produced films about animals in their natural environments. All his films were inspired by similar ideas. In most of them, innocence, loyalty, and family love are threatened by evil forces. They narrate sad events, but they also contain funny creatures and events. In all of them, eventually, good triumphs over evil. Disney won thirty-two Oscars from the Motion Picture Academy for his films and for scientific and technical inventions that facilitated their production.

Disney himself died in 1966. But the company that he started continues producing films, television programs, and innovations in Disneyland and the other Disney parks in Florida and the other parts of the world.
