El ex líder soviético recordó que durante la Guerra Fría, los Estados Unidos entrenó a los grupos militantes para luchar contra la Unión Soviética, que son los mismos que hoy están aterrorizando a Afganistán y cada vez más a Pakistán.

“Por eso para los Estados Unidos será más difícil salir de esta situación”, dijo. “Pero, ¿cuál es la alternativa? ¿Otro Vietnam? ¿Mandar medio millón de soldados?”

Según el periódico estadounidense “The Washington Post”, las agencias de inteligencia estadounidenses parecen estar apoyando esta posición. Las evaluaciones más recientes de estas agencias concluyen que las estrategias militares americanas son totalmente ineficaces en Afganistán.

Gorbachev says to the United States that victory is impossible in Afghanistan.

The man who twenty years ago oversaw the withdrawal of Soviet troops in Afghanistan said the United States will have to do the same if it wants to avoid another Vietnam.

“Victory is impossible in Afghanistan,” said Gorbachev. “Obama should withdraw his troops no matter how hard it is going to be.”

The former Soviet leader recalled that during the Cold War, the United States trained militant groups to fight against the Soviet Union, which are the same ones that are now terrorizing Afghanistan and, increasingly, Pakistan.

“So for the United States it will be more difficult to get out of this situation,” he said. “But what is the alternative? Another Vietnam? Sending in half a million soldiers?”

According to the American newspaper “The Washington Post,” U.S. intelligence agencies appear to be supporting this postiion. The most recent assessments of these agencies concluded that American military strategies are totally ineffective in Afghanistan.

Gorbachev was the last chief of state of the now defunct Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), which he led from 1988 until its collapse in 1991.

Under his tenure, in February 1989, the Soviet Union completed the withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan, which it had invaded a decade previously.

Regarding the political situation in Russia, he says that its democracy is facing problems. “I’m very worried because our system is democratic in part and also partly totalitarian,” he said. “And the battle is continuing. There are still many people in our society who are afraid of democracy and would prefer a totalitarian regime.”
