Cecil B. DeMille:

I tre uomini immediatamente iniziarono a fare film.

“Squaw Man” fu uno dei primi lungometraggi prodotti a Hollywood.

When you hear the name of Hollywood, you probably think of the partying, the lights, the “dolce vita,” the cameras, and the stars which, all together, make up the “glamour” of Hollywood. But directors and producers are also important for the production of films. Today Hollywood is filled with such people, but very few are as famous and successful as the pioneers of the industry, personalities like Cecil B. DeMille, Samuel Goldwyn, and Louis B. Mayer.

Cecil B. DeMille:

Cecil Blount DeMille was born in Ashfield, Massachusetts, in 1881. His father and morther were both playwrights. His father died when he was twelve years old. His mother established a theater company to maintain the family. Cecil joined the company as an actor.

He continued to work in his mother’s company as an actor and manager until 1913. That year he started to work with Jesse L. Lasky and Samuel Goldfish in founding the “Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company.” Later on, Goldfish changed his name to Samuel Goldwyn.

The three men immediately started to make films. They loved cinema and were interested in its creative and financial possibilities. DeMille, Lasky, and Goldfish wanted to do a movie version of “Squaw Man,” a very popular play on the American Wild West.

DeMille wanted to make this film in the American West. He chose Flagstaff, Arizona, for the production of the film. The three men traveled by train to Flagstaff. But when they arrived there, DeMille believed that the area had too modern an appearance. They then went to a small village in California near Los Angeles, Hollywood. DeMille decided that this village was the perfect place for the film. “Squaw Man” was one of the first feature-length films produced in Hollywood. It was released in 1913 and was an immediate success.

DeMille rapidly became a very important creative force in the new film industry. His success continued with “Brewster’s Millions,” “The Call of the North,” and “The Trail of the Lonesome Pine.” He was one of the very few film producers whose name appeared above the titles of his productions. His name was more important to the public than the names of the stars in his films.

DeMille’s productions were gigantic. He combined a lot of action, realistic narration, and hundreds of actors to produce many of the most famous films of Hollywood. He produced many kinds of films, including westerns, Comedies, romances, and productions that probed social and moral themes.

Many of DeMille’s films are epics and narrate important events in the history of the American Wild West, of the Roman Empire, and Bible stories. His first version of the historic film “The Ten Commandments” was a very great success among the silent films of 1923. In 1956 he presented to the public a new version of this film that included sound. In the United States, it is still broadcast on American television during Easter.

DeMille produced and directed seventy films. In 1949 he received a special award from the Motion Picture Academy for his very large production of successful films of very high quality. He died in 1959.

Samuel Goldfish/Goldwyn:

In 1895 a thirteen-year-old boy from Warsaw, Poland arrived in the United States. He was alone. He had no money and found work as a glovemaker. He continued in this industry until he was almost thirty years old.

In 1913 Samuel and his wife’s brother, Jesse L. Lasky, with Cecil B. DeMille, formed the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Company. In 1916, Goldfish founded a new company with Edgar Salwyn. They combined their names, Goldfish and Salwyn, and gave the name Goldwyn to the company. Samuel Goldwyn liked the name, and in 1913 he changed his own name to Samuel Goldwyn. The Goldwyn Company made many successful films but was not a financial success.

In 1922 Samuel Goldwyn had to leave the company. The Goldwyn Company combined with Metro Pictures to form the company Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, or MGM. Because he was excluded from this company, he decided that he would never form another company with other partners and formed his own company, Samuel Goldwyn Productions.

Goldwyn was one of the great independent producers of films during Hollywood’s “Golden Age.” Most of his films were economically successful and popular with film critics. He always insisted on the highest standards of production for his films. Generally he himself paid (for) the expenses of their production. He bought the best novels and plays for his films, and he hired the best actors and directors. He discovered Lucille Ball, Gary Cooper, Susan Hayward, and Will Rogers.

Goldwyn was extremely independent. He had a very strong desire to control each element of the production and presentation of his films to the public, and he himself made all his artistic decisions, including the selection of directors, actors, and writers. His best films include “The Little Foxes,” “The Best Years of our Lives,” and “Porgy and Bess.” His films received many awards from the Motion Picture Academy. In 1946 Goldwyn received the Irving Thalberg Award for his excellent films. He died in 1974.

Samuel Goldwyn worked in the film industry for almost sixty years. He has the reputation of being one of the most influential producers of American films.

Louis B. Mayer:

Louis B. Mayer started out as a theater manager in Haverhill, Massachusetts, in 1907. In the following years he bought more theaters. He soon owned the largest group of theaters in New England. In 1917 Mayer formed his own company for producing films. In the first part of the decade that began in 1920, Louis B. Mayer Pictures joined two other companies to form Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Mayer became the vice-president and general manager of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. He had a strong, paternalistic way of managing the company and supervising its actors. His company had some of the most famous actors of Hollywood, including Judy Garland, Clark Gable, Katherine Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. A popular expression at that time was that MGM had more stars than the sky itself. This company produced some of the most popular films in the history of filmmaking, including “The Wizard of Oz,” “Gone with the Wind,” and “The Philadelphia Story.”

In the two decades between 1930 and 1950 Louis B. Mayer was the most powerful businessman in Hollywood. He earned more than $1,200,000 a year, more than any other person the United States at that time.

In 1950 Mayer received a special award from the Motion Picture Academy for “excellent service to the film industry.” He died in Hollywood, California, in 1957 at age seventy-two.
