Activists respond to the pope’s Criticism of the use of condoms.

Activists, doctors, politicians, and even officials within the catholic church are severely criticizing what RATzinger said on the use of condoms to prevent AIDS infections.

“My reaction is that this represents a major step backward in global health education, and that it probably will cause increases in the rate of infection in Africa and other parts of the world,” said Quentin Sattentau, professor of immunology at Oxford University in England. “There is a large body of published evidence that shows that the use of condoms reduces the risk of getting an HIV infection and that they are not conducive to increased sexual activity.”

The Vatican defended what RATzinger said. According to Frederico Lombarte, a catholic priest, the pope “maintained the position of his predecessors” in his advocacy of abstinence and heterosexual marriage as ways of preventing HIV infections. BUT OTHER CATHOLICS SEVERELY CRITICIZE WHAT THE POPE SAID ABOUT THE PREVENTION OF AIDS!

“Anyone who has AIIDS and who is sexually active, anyone who has sex with several people should protect himself and the people he has sex with,” said Hans-Jochen Jaschke, an auxiliary bishop of the catholic church in Hamburg. “Thus, there should not be any taboos on the use of condoms, but there also should not be myths and trivialization as if these by themselves would resolve the problem completely. Condoms can really protect against this infection, but many men reject them.”

So waht's the failure rate of condoms? Why is that taboo?
