Ele enfatizou ainda que Cuba precisa eliminar gastos supérfluos, aumentar a poupança, criar uma agricultura forte e eficiente, capaz de substituir importações, e o país terá de promover a rejeição social de “várias manifestações de anarquia e corrupção”.

Castro também reconheceu que a juventude cubana está mudando em resposta aos acontecimentos internacionais e social, e pediu que a composição étnica e sexual da União de Jovens Comunistas continue evoluindo para que negros e mulheres sejam promovidos a cargos de direção.

“We will not ever give in to blackmail by any group of nations, no matter how big or powerful,” said Castro in a speech at the Congress of Communist Youth. “We have the right to defend ourselves.”

Castro denounced the use of Western media in a “huge campaign to discredit Cuba organized, directed and financed by the centers of imperial power in the United States and Europe, which are hypocritically waving the human-rights flag.”

He said that the Europeans were applying a hypocritical standard to Cuba in their silence in the face of torture in the war against terrorism, allowing illegal CIA flights and lending their territory to the creation of secret prisons for the torture and interrogation of prisoners by the CIA.

Castro bluntly stated the economic situation of the country. He said that the economic struggle is the main task of his government and that it depends on the preservation of the current economic and social system.
