Os túmulos, construídos cerca de 4,5 mil anos atrás, contêm os restos mortais dos trabalhadores que morreram enquanto levantavam as pirâmides de Quéops e Quéfren.

“Essas tumbas foram construídas ao lado da pirâmide do faraó, o que indica que essas pessoas não eram, de forma alguma, escravos”, disse o arqueólogo que chefiou os trabalhos de escavação, Zahi Hawass. “Se fossem escravos, eles não poderiam ter construído suas tumbas ao lado da tumba do faraó.”

The workers who built the pyramids were not slaves, say archaeologists.

Scientists have discovered in Egypt tombs whose location, close to major pyramids, reinforces the theory that these great monuments were built by free workers, not by slaves.

The tombs, built about 4500 years ago, contain the remains of the workers who died while raising the pyramids of Cheops and Chephren.

“These tombs were built beside the Pharaoh’s pyramid, which indicates that these people were not slaves in any way,” said the archaeologist who led the excavation, Zahi Hawass. “If they were slaves, they could not have built their tombs next to the pharaoh’s tomb.”

He said that these tombs “may be the most important discovery of the twenty-first century” with regard to Egyptian civilization.

The tombs are made of dry clay, similar to other graves discovered in 1990 and dating from the 4th and 5th Dynasty (2649-2374 BC).

Traditionally, Egyptian authorities have disputed the theory that the pyramids were built by slaves, arguing that this hypothesis (a myth in their words) ignores the necessary skills for their construction and the sophistication of Egyptian civilization.
