A cidade mexicana de Puebla, localizada a 130 quilômetros da capital, inaugurou nesta semana uma frota exclusiva de táxis para mulheres para protegê-las de assalto.

Chamados de “Pink Taxi” (Táxi Rosa), o serviço usa veículos pintados de cor-de-rosa, os quais são dirigidos por mulheres e voltados para uma clientela feminina.

Os 35 veículos circularão 24 horas por dia e são destinados para o uso das donas de casa, jovens universitárias, e mulheres da terceira idade, que podem solicitar o serviço por celular.

“Este sistema surge em razão da necessidade de contar com um transporte inovador e seguro para as mulheres”, afirmou o Secretario de Comunicações e Transporte do Governo de Puebla, Valentín Meneses Rojas. “Em outros lugares do mundo tais serviços vem funcionando com grande sucesso, e agora Puebla será pioneira no transporte exclusivo para mulheres na América Latina.”

Segundo Sandra Montalvo, diretora do Instituto Municipal da Mulher, há um grande número de queixas de roubos e abusos sexuais não só nos táxis, mas em outros meios de transporte público. “Também estamos planejando”, disse ela, “o lançamento de serviços de ônibus exclusivos para mulheres”.

Os críticos do sistema insiste que é sexista. “Isso não é verdade”, insiste Sandra Montalvo. “A ONU e todos os tratados internacionais sobre igualdade de gêneros permitem estas ações discriminatórias que têm por objetivo ajudar a reduzir a brecha entre homens e mulheres que ainda existe. São as chamadas ações afirmativas.”

Na Cidade do México há problemas freqüentes de crimes sexuais nos táxis, Puebla quer evitá-los. Somente entre janeiro e agosto deste ano, 25 taxistas foram detidos por abusos, e há uma média de seis a oito ataques cada mês.

To avoid assaults against women, a city in Mexico is introducing pink taxis.

The Mexican city of Puebla, located 130 kilometers from the capital, opened this week a fleet of taxis exclusively for women to protect them from assault.

Called “Pink Taxi,” the service uses vehicles colored pink, which are driven by women and aimed at a female clientele.

The thirty-five vehicles will be driven around twenty-four hours a day and are destined for the use of housewives, university students, and older women, who may request service by cell phone.

“This system arises from the need for innovative and safe transportation for women,” said the Secretary of Communications and Transport of the Government of Puebla, Valentín Meneses Rojas. “Elsewhere in the world such services have been running very successfully, and now a Puebla will be a pioneer in transportation exclusively for women within Latin America.”

According to Sandra Montalvo, director of the Municipal Institute for Women, there is a large number of complaints of theft and sexual abuse not only in taxis, but other forms of public transport. “We also are planning,” she said, “to launch exclusive bus services for women.”

Critics of the system insist that it is sexist. “That is not true,” insists Sandra Montalvo. “The UN and all international treaties on gender equality allow these discriminatory actions that are intended to help reduce the gap between men and women that still exist. They are called affirmative action.”

In Mexico City there are frequent problems of sex crimes in taxis, and Puebla wants to avoid them. Just between January and August this year twenty-five taxi drivers were arrested for abuse, and there is an average of six to eight attacks each month.
