The problem of mysterious changes in some of the colors of Van Gogh’s paintings has been solved.

A team of Belgian scientists has discovered why the bright yellows of Van Gogh paintings have turned brown.

Apparently, a complex chemical reaction is the basis of the deterioration.

The results are the first step toward understanding the reasons why some of the most famous Dutch paintings have been deteriorating with the passage of time and possibly toward the development of methods to keep them from continuing to deteriorate further.

The investigation, which has been published in the journal “Analytical Chemistry,” suggests that the affected paintings be protected as much as possible from ultraviolet and solar light.

To reach these conclusions, the scientists used a large number of analytical tools, including the European synchrotron in Grenoble, France, a leading tool in the study of the structure of materials.
