Militant promises to surrender and blows himself up in a meeting with a Saudi Prince.

A member of the Saudi royal family, Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, survived the explosion of a suicide bomber who was in his office in the port city of Jeddah on the Red Sea.

The bomber was a militant wanted by the police who had said he wanted to surrender personally to the Prince, who is responsible for security at the Interior Ministry and leads the fight against extremism in the country.

According to Saudi authorities, Nayef was preparing for a meeting to celebrate Ramadan, the Muslim holy month, when the suicide bomber, known as a wanted militant, detonated the explosives.

The official news agency said the Prince was the only victim with serious injuries in the attack.

This is the first known assassination attempt against a royal family member since that Saudi Arabia itself started its operation against militants eight years after the September 11th attacks in the United States.

In July, Saudi authorities said a criminal court tried and condemned more than 300 militants from the extremist al-Qaeda network to fines and imprisonment in the first trial of its kind.

On learning of the incident, King Abdullah went to the hospital where Nayef was being treated.

According to the official news agency of the country, the prince is no longer in the hospital.
