Le président des États-Unis, Barack Obama, a réintroduit les tribunaux militaires spéciaux à Guatanamo qu’il avait suspendu deux jours après qu’il a remplacé George Bush à la Maison Blanche. Il affirme, cependant, que ces nouveaux tribunaux assurent une meilleure protection pour les droits des accusés détenus.

Selon les nouvelles règles, les éléments de preuve obtenus par la torture ne seront pas autorisés, l’utilisation des informations de seconde main sera limitée, et les détenus de Guantanamo auront plus de latitude pour choisir leurs avocats. Obama will create new military tribunals at Guantanamo, with modifications.

The president of the United States, Barack Obama, has reintroduced the special military tribunals in Guatanamo that he had suspended two days after he replaced George Bush in the White House. He says, however, that these new tribunals will provide better protections for the rights of accused prisoners.

According to the new rules, the evidence obtained under torture will not be admissible, the use of second-hand information will be limited, and Guantanamo detainees will have more latitude to choose their lawyers. Obama also said he will work with Congress to establish “additional reforms.”

But there has been a general outcry by human-rights organizations, which have not forgotten that when he was running for the presidency Obama had said that the special military courts were contrary to the Geneva conventions. These organizations say that Obama cannot “fix” this system of special military courts, which are inherently defective.

Human Rights Watch is demanding that the prisoners of Guantanamo be tried by civilian courts in the United States instead of at Guantanamo Bay, which is located outside U.S. territory on the island of Cuba.
