Bossa nova

(Languages of this post: Interlingua, English)

Bossa Nova evolved from the samba but is more complex harmonically and less percussive. It emerged principally from the more prosperous neighborhoods near the beaches of of Rio de Janeiro, while the samba emerged in the slums (favelas) of Rio.

It seems probable that part of George Gershwin’s music, especially his “Cuban Overture” had a certain influence on Bossa Nova, along with other jazz styles, such as “cool jazz.”

Bossa nova was developed in Brazil in 1956 by João Gilberto. The first bossa nova song had the title “Bim-Bom.” This new genre of Brazilian popular music became better known to the Brazilian and international public with other projects by Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

The film “Orfeo Negro” in 1959 became popular in the United States, and I myself saw it for six times after it came to Los Angeles. Its immense popularity inspired projects by Charlie Byrd and Stan Getz, and the popularity of bossa nova in many parts of the world became solidified with collaborations by Getz and Gilberto and other projects by famous jazz artists such as Ella Fitzgerald (Ella Abraça Jobim) and Frank Sinatra (Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim).

Perhaps “The Girl from Ipanema,” sung in both English and Portuguese by Astrud Gilberto, is the most famous of all of these songs. It has a quality of coolness that can be found in very few other cool jazz compositions, such as “Take Five” by Dave Brubeck.

Another important influence on bossa nova was the song "Dans mon île" by French singer Henri Salvador, which was an important part of a 1957 Italian movie, “Europa di notte”, which was very popular in Brazil. In 2005, Henri Salvador received the Brazilian Order of Cultural Merit, from the Brazilian of Culture, Gilberto Gil, in the presence of President Lula, because of his influence on Brazilian culture.

Another influence on bossa nova was the song “Julie Is Her Name,” which Julie London sang while Barney Kessel accompanied her on the guitar. This song is especially well known for the relaxed coolness its vocalist reinforced by the support of the musical instruments that produced many interesting effects that inspired the style used by other musicians who played Brazilian music after that record became popular in that country.

While bossa nova is primarily a Brazilian creation, it would not have evolved without a lot of influence from the musical styles of other countries, especially in Anglo-America. This is an indication of how the internationalization of popular music among all the countries of Europe and America has produced its own styles of music that are becoming a fundamental part of an emerging international culture within the countries of Europe and their former colonies.
