Baltasar Garzon has petitioned the European Court of Human Rights to restore his right to investigate the crimes of the Franco regime.

Spanish judge Baltasar Garzon filed an appeal before the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg to challenge the legality of proceedings underway against him in the Supreme Court of Spain for his investigations of crimes of the Franco regime.

The appeal was filed “at the request of the families and representatives of victims of the regime of Fracisco Franco,” said a statement from the Center for the Legal Protection of Human Rights, based in London, which is representing him.

The Strasbourg court must decide whether or not to accept the case.

Garzon, who has been suspended temporarily from his duties at the Audiencia Nacional in Spain, argues that the procedure followed against him for investigating crimes of the Franco regime violates Spain’s obligations to avoid any interference in his human-rights investigations that are clearly established in the European Convention on Human Rights.
