The British Parliament supports the United Kingdom’s involvement in Libya.

The British House of Commons voted on Monday by an overwhelming majority to support the United Kingdom’s involvement in international military operations in Libya.

The mission was backed by 557 MPs, and only thirteen were opposed.

The widespread support contrasts with the majority opinion of the British themselves. According to a survey Monday by ITV News, only 35% agreed with the international operation.

During the debate, the Prime Minister, David Cameron, said that international forces have acted in time to prevent a slaughter of the rebel city Benghasi by Qaddafi’s army.

He said that Libya needed to get rid of Qaddafi but that the role of the United Kingdom was limited to enforcing the U.N. resolution calling for the protection of civilians.
