Koreans are looking for Asian Americans to be new pop stars.

In our era of instantaneous communications and of a global culture that is gradually emerging, a Korean pop-music impresario is now trying to find new singers and dancers among Asian Americans for possible careers as pop idols in Korea.

Soo-Man Lee, the president of S.M. Entertainment in Seoul, is now looking in eleven American cities for possible Korean pop stars.

"It isn't important that these singers, rappers, and dancers speak only English," Lee said. "We can always teach them Korean. What is essential is that know American culture really well."

Up to now, he has discovered about six Asian Americans who have become celebrities in Korea. The Koreans greatly admire the various forms of American pop music, but they prefer that their rockers and other stars have a Korean (or at least Asian) look while they dance like Britney Spears or exhibit the macho confidence of Eminem.

Young people in Korea are fans of Hollywood films. They wear Gap jeans and download music from iTunes, but "they simply don't know how to rap," explained Frances Hur, the president of Sky Light Entertainment, a company tha promotes Korean music. "And there are many things that only Amercans know how to do."

The Koreans, like the Japanese, were an insular culture with little contact with cultures outside their country. But they love pop artists of Asian origin who would like to be the next Korean Beyoncé, Missy Elliott, or Usher, even if they don't speak Korean very well.

"In the United States, professional careers are very limited for Asian-American actors," said Kathine Ko, an ambitious actress who would like to forge a career in Korea. "There is Sandra Oh, a star in the television series 'Grey's Anatomy,' but I don't know of other actresses of Asian origin who have significant careers in the United States. Even African Americans have greater professional possibilities as actors in American movies and television."

"Our country needs bilingual pop stars," said Soo-Man Lee. "BoA, for example, is possibly our most famous star. He is bilingual in Korean and Japanese and is very popular in both countries. If we can develop new bilingual American stars, it is possibile that they will eventually become very popular in the United States. We would like to promote them in the United States because America is the largest market in the entire world for pop music."
