Le rege Theodosio

Theodosio, post audir isto, deveniva multo triste, dicente, "Duo ex mi filias me decipeva.

E ille faceva isto.

Filia iunior pauperissima eum in magna necessitate succurrit.

...

Theodosius in civitate imperii Romani regnavit, prudens valde et potens qui tres filias pulchras habebat, dixitque filiae seniori, "Quantam diligis me?" At illa, "Certe plus quam me ipsam." Ait ei pater, "Et te ad magnas divitias promovebo." Eam dedit regi opulento et potenti in uxorem.

Post haec venit ad secundam filiam et ait ei, "Quantum diligis me?" At illa, "Tantam quantum me ipsam." Theodosius tum eam cuidam duci tradidit in uxorem.

Tradidit eam cuidam comiti in uxoem.

King Theodosius, who had three daughters, was expelled from the empire. His youngest daughter, who was the poorest, rescues him in his need.

...

Theodosius, a very prudent and powerful man who had three daughters, ruled over a city in the Roman empire. He asked his oldest daughter, "How much do you love me?" She replied, "Certainly more than I love myself." Her father then told her, "I will see to it that you get a rich husband." He gave her hand in marriage to a rich and powerful king.

After this he approached his second daughter and asked her, "How much do you love me?" And she replied, "As much as I love myself." Theodosius then gave her hand in marriage to a certain duke.

And after this he approached his third daughter and asked her, "How much do you love me?" And she said, "Just as much as you deserve and no more or no less." And her father replied, "This being the case, I won't be able to get you married to a man as rich as your sisters' husbands." He gave his hand in marriage to some count.

Shortly afterward, the Emperor expelled Theodosius from his kingdom to a place where he was completely unprotected. He wrote a letter to his first daughter, who said that she loved her father more than she did herself, so that she could help him out after his expulsion from the empire.

His daughter, after reading this letter, told her husband about her father's crisis. The king said, "We really ought to help him out in his hour of need."

She replied, "That can't be done without spending a lot of money. It's enough for you to give him five soldiers to help him out while he is away from his kingdom." This is exactly what he did. This daughter wrote him back saying that she could not provide him with any further help.

After he heard this, Theodosius became very sad and said, "All my hope was in my oldest daughter who said that she loved me more than she did herself, and because of this I found her a very rich husband."

He wrote to his second daughter who said, "I love you as much as I love myself" so that she could help him out in his hour of great need. But when she heard this, she told her husband about the problem and advised him to give her father nothing other than food and clothing. And she wrote her father back to tell him this.

Theodosius, when he heard this, became very sad and said, "I was fooled by two of my daughters. I will now try out my third daughter who said to me, 'I love you just as much as you deserve.'" He wrote her a letter asking him to rescue her in his hour of great need and told her how her sisters had answered him.

His third daughter, when she found out how helpless her father was, said to her husband, "My lord, please help me out in this hour of need. My father has been thrown into exile from his own land. Her husband replied, "What do you want me to do?" She then said, "Get an army together and take it to him yourself to defeat his enemy." The count then replied, "I will do what you want me to."

He gathered together a large army and at his own expense went to war with Theodosius. He won and returned Theodosius to his own kingdom.

Theodosius then said, "Blessed is the hour when I fathered my youngest daughter. I loved her less than my other daughters and she was the one who rescued me in my hour of need, and my other daughters refused to help, so I am going to give my kingdom to my youngest daughter," and that is what happened. After her father died, the youngest daughter ruled the kingdom and died in peace.
