Le population del mundo explode.

(Languages of this post: Interlingua, English)

The population of the world is exploding.

The population of the world is growing by 100,000,000 (one hundred million) people a year, and this figure has never been so high.

In the coming forty years, global population is going to grow by 3.7 (three point seven) billion people, and 90 (ninety) percent of this growgh is going to take place in the developing countries. In Africa the population will triple to 1.5 (one point 5) million [1,500,000]. In Asia the figure will grow from three to five billion.

This is the conclusion of a report from the World Bank, which predicts a worsening of the connection between poverty and pollution. The poor are victims of pollution and pollute a lot themselves because their very survival forces them into short-term thinking.

The best response, according to the World Bank, is to stimulate economic growth because such growth is one of the methods for protecting the environment--a popular idea at the moment.

According to the priorities listed below, the World Bank proposes that the greatest attention be given

(1) to the third of the world population that constantly confronts unsatisfactory sanitary conditions,

(2) to the one billion that does/do not have access to pure water,

(3) to the 1.3 (one point three) billions living in very dangerous atmospheric pollution from fire and soot,

(4) to the 300 (three hundred) to 700 (seven hundred) million women and children who live in air pollution inside their homes from open fires (this corresponds to smoking [from] three to five packs of cigarettes per day),

(5) and to the several hundred million farmers cultivating land that is losing its productive capacity because they lack the resources and knowledge of even the simplest of methods to fortify the productivity of their fields.

The abolition of public subsidies can be a help. When Indonesia abolished subsidies for remedies against vermin, the rural environment started to improve.

The price of these changes is remarkable. A realistic sum would be 75 (seventy-five) billion dollars in new investments to minimize pollution, protect forests and health, provide potable water for a growing number of people, and stimulate investments in education and family planning.

Such initiatives would do a lot to improve conditions throughout the world if the prosperous nations recognized their importance without forgetting the inevitable long-term deterioration of their own prosperity if they neglect them.
